Inkamazonia Hummingbird GardenThe Best Place to Observe Hummingbirds in Peru
As we mentioned in a previous article about hummingbirds at Ensifera Camp, these birds captivate both children and adults alike.
Their rapid flight, iridescent colors, and the magical legends surrounding them keep us connected to their beauty. Just as Ensifera Camp offers an excellent opportunity for observing hummingbirds of Cusco in the Andes, the Inkamazonia Hummingbird Garden is undoubtedly the best place to observe hummingbirds of Cusco in the cloud forest of Peru.
Peru is home to a remarkable 126 species of hummingbirds, with Cusco being the region with the highest diversity of these fascinating birds. While many species can be found throughout the country, it is the cloud forest that holds the greatest concentration of hummingbirds of Peru. This is why Inkamazonia, located along the famous Manu Road, is the best opportunity for observing hummingbirds of Cusco and those of the Peruvian jungle.
At the Inkamazonia Hummingbird Garden, more than 40 species of Peru’s hummingbirds have been recorded. In addition to these enchanting birds, Inkamazonia also provides a chance to observe other fascinating species like tinamous, chachalacas, cuckoos, barbets, toucans, and tanagers, further enriching the experience.
How to Get to Inkamazonia Hummingbird Garden
Although public transportation exists between Cusco and the town of Pillcopata, schedules aren’t always convenient, and it can be frustrating not to stop for iconic birds like the Andean Cock-of-the-rock, the Quetzal, or the Umbrellabird along the way. Nonetheless, public transport remains an affordable option, though it’s worth noting that drivers often travel at high speeds.
Another option is to join organized tours to Manu National Park. These tours tend to be general, with only two or three stops along the way, focusing mainly on the lower areas of Manu National Park. However, it’s essential to remember that the altitudinal gradient itself provides the greatest diversity of species, making the route an attraction in itself. While this option may be more economical, visits to Inkamazonia are limited to a short amount of time. Nevertheless, it’s a viable option, and service quality varies depending on the price.
For a complete experience at Inkamazonia Hummingbird Garden, we offer a short 3-day tour. On the first day, we travel from Cusco to Pillcopata, stopping at key points to observe bird movement or listen for mixed-species flocks. The second day is dedicated to enjoying Cusco’s hummingbirds at Inkamazonia, followed by a search for guadua bamboo bird species in the afternoon. On the third day, we return to Cusco, making strategic stops at points where interesting species have been observed.
Many visitors also inquire about the option to rent a vehicle and explore the route independently. This is an excellent choice, but it requires experience driving narrow, winding roads with some steep cliffs. If driving under these conditions is not appealing, this option could be more stressful than enjoyable.
Remember that Inkamazonia Hummingbird Garden is a dream destination for many birdwatchers, and we assure you that you can make this dream a reality with affordable, fair prices and well-designed programs to offer you the best of Cusco’s hummingbirds.
