There is no doubt that one of the best ways to enjoy nature and free your soul is on a bicycle. But that experience can be enriched by bird watching along the way. There is nothing quite like it!
Just 30 kilometers from Cusco is the Huacarpay Wetland. Here, more than a hundred different species of birds have been known to visit—resident, migratory, as well as Cusco endemic birds.
Enjoy the Peruvin birds while re-connecting with yourself through one of the best birding experiences in your life. Birds and Bikes!!!
We will start our biking tour adventure at 5:30 A.M. with the pickup from your hotel. It’s an easy 40 minute drive on good roads to Huarcarpay Wetlands. Upon our arrival, we will take out our bicycles, grab our binoculars and cameras, then start pedaling!
The biking tour circuit is seven kilometers long following a paved road around the main lagoon and the wetlands.
Huarcarpay Wetland has several different environments that we will search including a scrub sector, eucalyptus forests, wetlands, marshy and agricultural areas. These places will give us the opportunity to see a great variety of Cusco birdlife such as herons, egrets and ducks. Yellow-winged blackbirds, Many-colored Rush Tyrants and Wren-like Rushbirds are some of the favorite birds around the wetlands.
In areas where wild tobacco flowers grow, we will have the chance to look for different hummingbirds like the Sparkling violetear, Bearded Mountaineer (Endemic), Black and Green Tailed Trainbearer and the Giant Hummingbird. In the brushy areas we will find the elusive Rusty-fronted Canastero (Endemic) while along the lakeshore we will watch out for Puna Ibis, Slate-colored Coot, Plumbeous Rail and much more.
The biking tour route will be mostly flat, without any demanding climbs or steep slopes. Our vehicle will always be close by.
We will finish our biking tour around 12:00 and be back in Cusco in time for you to grab lunch.
