ITINERARY:
Day 1 Manu Road 3600 to 500 Elfin Forest & Cloud Forest
Embark on an exhilarating adventure into the enchanting realm of Peru’s birdwatching paradise as we greet the early morning at 4:30 a.m. Our expedition commences along the renowned Manu Road, a legendary route cherished by birding aficionados worldwide. Our first pause brings us to the picturesque village of Paucartambo, a delightful enclave where travelers can stock up on essentials like fresh water and fruits.
By 7:30 a.m., we cross the Acjanaco checkpoint, marking our official entry into the esteemed Manu National Park. Throughout the day, we venture deep into the heart of the Manu Road, traversing a diverse landscape of varying altitudes. Starting our journey at 3600 meters (12,000 feet), we ascend the park’s majestic peaks before gradually descending to 500 meters (1,640 feet), where the lush embrace of tropical rainforest in Pillcopata awaits our exploration.
Day 2: Manu Road 500 Jardin de Picaflores y Aves de Bambu
At the break of dawn, around 5:00 a.m., we’ll journey to the Atalaya Port, where we’ll board a boat to explore the Upper Madre de Dios River. Our aim? To discover a clay lick bustling with colorful macaws and parrots, offering a breathtaking natural spectacle.
After marveling at this stunning display of wildlife, we’ll continue our voyage along the Upper Madre de Dios River, venturing into the jungle’s heart via a winding trail that leads to a secluded lagoon. Here, amidst the lush foliage, we’ll seek out other captivating bird species native to Peru.
Once we’ve immersed ourselves in the beauty of the jungle, we’ll return to the charming town of Pillcopata. Here, we’ll pay a visit to the Inkamazonia hummingbird garden, a haven for these tiny, vibrant creatures. As we savor a delectable local lunch, we’ll enjoy the company of these remarkable birds, observing their intricate dance of flight and feeding.
Following our delightful lunch and enchanting encounter with hummingbirds, we’ll venture into the extraordinary bamboo patches. Here, amidst this unique ecosystem, we’ll have the opportunity to search for Peruvian birds that thrive in this verdant habitat.
Day 03 Manu y Ollanta – Mapi 500 to 4000 masl
On the thrilling third day of our adventure, we’ll embark on a journey that will take us from 500 meters to an impressive 4000 meters above sea level. During this day, we’ll majestically traverse the Andes of Cusco, starting from the lush Manu area and reaching the charming town of Pisaq. From here, we’ll continue our journey through the sacred Sacred Valley of the Incas, heading towards the picturesque town of Ollantaytambo. It will be from here that we’ll embark on an exciting train ride to the magical town of Machu Picchu, where we’ll spend the night immersed in the wonderful atmosphere of this ancient place.
Day 04 Mapi y Ollanta Aves de Machu Picchu
Our Machupicchu Birdwatching Tour begins bright and early at 5:30 am, as we embark on a serene walk towards the Ruinas Bridge. Upon arrival, we’ll immerse ourselves in the rich birdlife of Machu Picchu, with sightings ranging from woodpeckers and tanagers to flycatchers and hummingbirds. Yet, the true highlights are the endemic avian treasures of Machu Picchu, including the Masked Fruiteater, Green-and-White Hummingbird, and Inca Flycatcher, alongside other captivating Peruvian bird species such as the Andean Motmot, Green Jay, and Cock of the Rock.
Time permitting, our journey continues towards the Mandor Cascades, where the flat terrain offers ample opportunities for further birdwatching adventures amidst the lush surroundings.
After working up an appetite, we’ll return to Aguas Calientes for a satisfying lunch (please note that lunch is not included). At 2:00 pm, guided by our expert, we’ll hop on a bus to ascend to the majestic Machu Picchu citadel for an unforgettable one-and-a-half-hour exploration of this iconic site. Keep your eyes peeled, especially in the bamboo patches, where you might catch a glimpse of the elusive Inca Wren, another of Machu Picchu’s unique bird species.
As departure time approaches (30 minutes before your train departs), you’ll board the train back to the charming town of Ollantaytambo, where we’ll spend the night.
Day 05 Abra Malaga Polylepis y Bambu
Our Fullday Tour of Malaga Pass kicks off bright and early, with a pick-up from your Ollantaytambo hotel. We’ll embark on a scenic drive along the winding road that links Cusco city to the lush jungle. After three hours of traversing the breathtaking Abra Malaga, our first stop waits in the serene San Luis area, nestled on the eastern slopes of Malaga Pass. Here, we’ll seek out Cusco’s avian gems, including the iconic Parodi’s Hemispingus and the elusive Cuzco Brushfinch. But our real focus will be on the bamboo patches, where we hope to catch sight of the enchanting Inca Wren, Marcapata Spinetail, and Unstreaked Tit-Tyrant.
From San Luis, our journey loops back to Malaga Pass (38 kms), with strategic stops along the way to maximize bird sightings. As the day progresses, we’ll begin our descent into the polylepis woodland, where a plethora of avian wonders awaits. Keep your eyes peeled for the majestic Royal Cinclodes, the charming White-browed Tit-Spinetail, and the elusive Ash-breasted Tit-tyrant, among others.
Amidst this tranquil setting, we’ll pause for a delightful box lunch, replenishing our energy for the uphill trek. As we ascend at a leisurely pace, we’ll keep our binoculars handy, hoping to catch glimpses of any birds we may have missed earlier in the day.
As the clock strikes 5:00 pm, we’ll conclude our unforgettable Abra Malaga Birdwatching tour, returning you safely to your Ollantaytambo hotel, filled with memories of a day spent amidst Peru’s avian wonders.
Day 06 Valle
On our final day of the journey, we’ll make our way back from the quaint town of Ollantaytambo to the vibrant city of Cusco. Along the route, we’ll make a stop at the Ensifera Camp Hummingbird Garden, a fantastic spot teeming with various species of these delightful little creatures. We’ll also keep our eyes peeled for different raptors that may grace our path. Lastly, we’ll pay a visit to the high Andean lagoon of Piuray, where we’ll conclude our unforgettable birdwatching experience by observing the avian wonders of the lagoon and its surroundings.
Upon our arrival in Cusco, we’ll embark on the traditional city tour, soaking in the rich history and culture of this ancient Incan capital. And what better way to cap off our journey than with the ultimate pisco tasting and cocktail experience, where we’ll savor the flavors of Peru’s iconic national spirit.
